If you want to learn leadership, Watch the life of leaders. Indian history is dotted with many great leaders who can teach us many things about leadership. One such great leader is Chandrashekhar Azad. He built a team of revolutionaries and made Indian socialist republican army. There are many incidents in his life when he showed many leadership skills. Few of the learnings from his life are as follows.
1. A leader never thinks of self-interest- British police were in search of revolutionaries. All of them were hiding in a place. One night they had nothing to eat except sprouted grams. All of them were eating their share and suddenly azad got angry while discussing something and he threw all his grams in the drain in rage. After some time when he became calm, he picked those grams one by one, washed them and started eating. His teammates urged him not to eat them and they said that they will take some money from the party fund to purchase some food for him. He denied and said that the fund is for the nation and party. He cannot take even a single penny from it for his personal gain. This shows us that a leader never gives priority to personal benefit even in extreme situations.
2.Sacrifice- There are many incidents when Azad sacrificed for his team. When they planned to shoot sanders, Azad was the last one to run away from the spot. When he got sure that everyone from his team has escaped, then only he left the place. When he was sitting in the garden and Britishers attacked them, he ordered his teammate to run away while he kept fighting till the end. These incidents show that a leader has to sacrifice a lot for his team.
3. Humourous- Azad was not a serious person. There are many incidents which show that he had a great sense of humor. He named his revolver 'Bumtul bukhara'.He always cracked jokes amongst his teammates to keep them happy. Once he was hiding in a jungle near a kingdom and the king knew him. A British official was coming to visit the king. Azad sent him a message just for fun saying that can he come to visit the officer.King wrote him back " dont do such nonsense and go a little deeper in the forest. So he was like this, always having fun and enjoying his life.
4.Skills - a leader must have all the necessary skills.Aajad was a nice shooter. He was physically and mentally strong. He especially learnt driving vehicle which helped him and his teammates in many adverse situations.A leader should always work to improve his skills.
5. Empathy-Leader must have empathy towards his team and others. Azad always cared for his team.He tried a lot to bring bhagatsing out from the jail.He always supported and helped his teammates.A leader must be sincere, honest and empathetic towards others.
6. Self respect and courage- A leader never compromises his self respect. Azad had taken an oath that he will always remain Azad(independent)till he is alive.british army could never catch him till he was alive. He was a man of courage and valor.A leader must have the courage to overcome any circumstance.
These are a few learnings from the life of Azad which can be incorporated to become a successful leader. Because of all these qualities, AZAD is a legend.
